International Day for Disaster Reduction 12 October
On 12 October each year, we observe
the International Day for Disaster Reduction. The 2004 Indian Ocean
tsunami and, in 2005, Hurricane Katrina in the United States and the recent
earthquake in Pakistan and India demonstrated again that no one is immune from
the devastation of natural disasters, but they also hold lessons about how
their human toll can be mitigated.
